Layering dainty necklaces

Layering is just wearing more than one necklace at once. With a few easy rules, it looks tidy and feels relaxed.

Here is how to start.

Space the lengths

Leave about an inch or two between each chain so the charms do not sit on top of each other. For example, wear a shorter chain with an initial charm and a longer one with a birth flower charm.

The birth flower necklace comes in 15, 18 and 20 in, so you can pick lengths that sit apart.

Keep one tone

Staying with one tone, all gold tone or all silver tone, makes a layered look feel calm. You can mix later once you are used to it.

Choose one bigger charm and one smaller one, so the eye knows where to land.

Avoid tangles

Fasten each chain before you put on the next, and put the longest one on first. Take them off one at a time too.

Store them apart, in a pouch or a box with slots. Our storing delicate jewelry guide has more ideas.

Start small

If layering is new to you, begin with two chains and wear them for a day. Notice whether the charms bump into each other when you move. If they do, add another inch or so of space and try again. You can always add a third chain later, once the first two feel easy.
